Tonight I ordered our winter wood supply. We have a nice wood burning stove in our family room which basically heats the house.

When I told him that 3 cords were being delivered on Friday – happiness! He said he’ll have to go out in his workshop and get it ready. (We store our wood in there as he no longer does wood working) He told me he is happy we are organized and getting our wood this week.

Moments later he offered to put the Christmas lights on the back decks and in the apple tree. We sometimes get a cold snap in November and commented he wanted them up early.

The conversation was so familiar, happy and normal that it teased me.

Not sure if I’ve mentioned this before so here goes. In my observations, it appears Alzheimer’s patients lose sense of smell, taste, feeling pain, hunger.

They still do love and need lots and lots of love. Today we had lunch out at a rather nice restaurant. The day was chilly and we were enjoying their fireplace and cozy chairs. I leaned over and told him he is doing so well. “Well, thank you, Honey, I appreciate that.” On cloud nine for the rest of the meal. Both of us.

Anyway, lost my point. He is never hungry. So just offer a snack or meal. If I ask, he always declines but does he ever eat if I just serve it. Or drive to a restaurant and eat.

Today we lingered over coffee like old times. Won’t forget this lunch for a long while:)

“Remember when we used to wrap the nose in a tarp and run the kerosene heaters?”

Last night, out of the blue, he discussed the cold weather and cold hangers. We were sitting reading and he recounted the details perfectly. Often it would be -40 or -50 and they would run a heater under each plane’s engine block and wrap the nose in a canvas tent – praying it would keep them warm enough to start when needed.
