For several days now, he doesn’t read. Usually we put the fire on and settle in with a book or two.

Last night I watched him – he sat gazing at the fire (which he does love) but did nothing else. Asked him what he had picked to read tonight – he said he’d just relax and watch the fire.

I’m hoping this is a passing phase because he doesn’t have much in life to really entertain himself with. No more computer, no more TV (except news & Frasier and losing interest in those), rarely will watch a DVD – maybe for 10 minutes – then he says he doesn’t like “that type movie”. Of course, whatever I put on used to be his favs.

We’ve had a good “run” for a bit – maybe another phase is starting.

(Friday we received a thank you card from Chef for making his Christmas as nice as we could from afar. Dad was so pleased to see something personal addressed to him. You guys just rock and I mean that so sincerely.)

Back in ’78, he stripped the beautiful, old roll top desk and then I spent hours sanding it to his perfection – when he was happy with the job, he stained it a beautiful soft color. This desk he bought for me as a gift but he is the one who really cherishes it.

Last night I walked into the room to see he had set two glasses on it. I snatched them off, sick at what I would see. But nothing – no marks.

Lately, he will set a glass or mug down “wherever” – I have coasters on all four corners of any wood pieces. It’s so unreal to see this as he loves fine wood – actually, I am planning to give away a lot of my stuff to the guys. If they don’t want it, I will sell it. We have collected antiques over the years but some how they don’t hold my interest as much now.
