Well, thank the good Lord eye exams only come once per year. I have to praise the staff at the optometrist’s office – they are exceptional dealing with my man.
If it weren’t so serious, it would be humorous. We walk in and they ask us to update phone, address, meds, etc. Once he realizes this is in his regard, he is unhappy. “Where are we? Why, my eyes are good. This is just not necessary. You didn’t tell me.” (I had.)
Dodged bullets when an assistant called him but he persisted in the why’s and not me’s. Luckily she was a cheery, chatty young lady and threw him off, I think. After she took the “eyeball” pics, we were escorted to the exam room – again, why, not me – on and on.
The doctor luckily caught on quickly that he doesn’t know right from left and reworded her questions. His eyes have not changed in 5 years. We’re so fortunate.
As for her staff and the doc, bless them, bless them, bless them.
I love his voice – when we were dating, I couldn’t wait for him to phone, just to listen to him.
Some days I wonder if I should tape it – especially when I call to him and it’s the “old” way he says “yeah”. It’s kind of “uh, yeaahuh.”
He has the slightest accent and also unique sayings that make me laugh, still.
Said we should get to bed – he asked the time. After midnight.
“Just the shank of the evening,” then laughs his old laugh.
Grateful as I am for glimpses of yesterday, I still long for them everyday.
