I have decided it’s time to rid our house of (some) the extras – and I do mean we have extras. We have 3 computer desks, our antique rolltop, his office desk. So, I guess you get the picture of our (my) over indulgence during almost 43 years together.

Anyway, just gave one computer desk away, from 1989, first home pc. That computer was over $3000.00, if you can imagine.

At Easter time 2007, Mark was here visiting and we bought my laptop (no crawling around wires). Still have our “ma and pa” desks and computers downstairs.

The point of my post is that I feel it’s difficult to get rid of his desk (for sentimental reasons) – he has not been able to use it for a long time. The monitor will be taken to recycling and the hard drive removed. Should I sell my desk, also? Seems it would be kind of mean to take one and not the other – and I hate crawling around cables!!!

As usual, I ask your valued opinions, what would you do?

We have started to get rid of some of our *stuff.*
We have so much that we are not using.
At first it was difficult because we had worked so hard to accumulate this *stuff* but now it is starting to feel liberating.
Go with your own instinct as to when is the *right* time.

Jean, our little 10′ by 12′ den has packed into it my Mom’s computer desk, my Dad’s “home office” desk, my grandmother’s antique writing desk, an antique school desk, 2 filing cabinets, grandkids’ toy box, dog bed, a small couch and our “main” TV!!

My Mom isn’t ready to get rid of Dad’s desk, and that’s okay with me. If making changes is too stressful, or you just don’t feel “ready,” don’t do it.

We can all three fit “cozily” on the little couch to watch TV, so I guess that’s good enough. :) :)

    Love, Laura

Do you think he would miss it? I am all for decluttering, just wrote a post about it, but there is more here than getting rid of clutter. There are his memories of things in certain places. But you know better than anyone whether he would even know something was gone. This has got to be so hard for you.

I am the queen of too much stuff, Jean. I realize that I need to start thinning out, but it is hard.

If he has not been able to use the desk and won’t again, I’d get rid of it. He may not even remember it was there when it is gone. If you will use yours again, then keep it.
