Attended the funeral on my own. As I entered the church, was directed to the guest book.

Signed both our names. (He can’t anymore so it seemed perfectly natural to me.)

Funny how Life works. The family appreciated it – they thought I did it on purpose. It was comforting to them as they said they knew he was there in spirit.

The huddled in their club house, a rejected cube van in the back yard. Sacred ground for 3 young men, preteens.

Anyway, the story goes that “one” of them got the bright idea to light and “smoke” pieces of an old chair they had. Wicker? Rattan? As he and his brother reminisce about it now, they agreed the chair wasn’t really smokeable but they did light pieces. The last visit his brother made here, we sat for a long time as they recounted some stories.

It’s actually a more special story to hear as he never did smoke, was awarded “Athlete of the Year” for 5 years at his high school – played soccer, hockey, basketball, did gymnastics and cross country running – in whatever shoes he owned, back then.

I have three medals he won running and will frame them for him. “It’s no big deal” is always his response.
