I was hand washing a couple pots, he asked if I needed help.
What to do, what to do. If I say “yes” he’s all buzzed and mixed up. Do I say “no, thanks” and he feels useless?
“Sure, here’s a T-towel, you can dry the pots.”

It was so sweet. He took the T-towel, folded it neatly, pulled out the rod and hung the towel. Walked to the living room and settled in his easy chair.

I had to laugh, reminded me of something a kid would do to get out of work. Pots are still in the sink – I left them on purpose – they make me smile.

So after thinking things over for a bit, one of our sons called tonight, assuring me it is the right thing, to do a week’s respite in the New Year.

We discussed all the pro’s and con’s, keeping Dad’s best interest at the forefront of any decision making. During the process of the journey, I have updated both sons after medical visits, drug changes and suggestions from the specialist. It’s comforting that we always agree on the action to take (or not to take).

If it were not causing some medical issues for me, I’d try to slug it out. That was a huge factor in his decision – “if you get so sick you can’t care for Dad, then he will have to go in for sure, not just for a week”. I feel better now that the decision has been made.
