Was thinking of my friend last night and voila! I have an idea how to protect the wooden tables from his glasses and cups.

She used the larger “coasters” as place mats in her restaurant. That should work here. What happens to my dear man is that his brain seems to been sending “opposite” messages. For example, he sets the coaster aside and places the mug on the bare table. Being the mat is larger, I think he will just set his mug on it and not remove it.
