He’s been in bed since 6pm – I went in to wake him.
“What am I doing here? Can anyone tell me? Am I here for tests or what?”
I did the code. “You’re home, you’re in your own bed, in the bedroom.”
He got up and ate a nice Bartlet pear, forgetting his confusion.
Due to the nature of the disease, patients have to be housed in secure units.
Doors are opened by code, they are also disguised to prevent any “ideas”. Our unit has bookshelves filled with books painted on the doors. It actually fooled me the first time when I was looking for the way out.
The client can “go outside on his own” when he wants as the patio/lawn area is enclosed. At our home choice, there are outdoor games such as basketball and all kinds of lawn furniture.
It’s a win, win for the family. One care home just had body alarms on Wayne and he was furious when it would go off – “Well, Hon, you are trying to make your escape.” Anyway, it wasn’t the facility for him although everyone was superb and the care was wonderful.
I’d definitely suggest a care facility with secured units – actually, here AD patients are no longer accepted anywhere else – for everyone’s sake.
I always walk Wayne into the day care centre and get him settled – it would be so much easier to hand him over at the door to one of the nurses – and I did that when he was so difficult about going.
Kind of a sweet thing yesterday. The nurse was guiding one client to his chair, his sense of direction totally off. She had him all lined up to sit in a recliner when he moved and sat on the end table. After much ado, he got seated.
Almost as if to copy, Wayne did exactly the same thing and ended up sitting on an end table momentarily:)
I have to say, the facility has been decorated very nicely with recliners, over stuffed chairs, hard back chairs and a love seat. There are end tables between each chair. A fireplace graces the seating area and is always decorated in the theme of the season.
A kitchen has been built opposite the fireplace. Clients are served soup and a sandwich with dessert for lunch.
