I wish words would come to me to describe watching Wayne function/not function. I’d like to ask God to write a program I could use to plug into his brain and see where the thoughts get mixed up – kind of an AD GSP.
No wonder people view him as “not so bad”. He should have been in politics, he can even snow me some times.
Yesterday he jumped up from the table, excused himself, hugged me then turned to his fellow residents and said, “See you guys later.” With a big smile he left. I was so impressed.
I forget myself in (normal) moments like that and asked what he had for supper. Couldn’t remember eating.
There is a resident who reports to me all his “happenings”. As we walked away she announced, “He didn’t eat much supper but he ate all his fish and chips for lunch.” Another world indeed.
Today I ventured into his workshop – what a disaster zone! He would be so upset if he saw how his tools look. There’s rust on a lot of stuff. The good saws etc. are rusted and I’m not sure if it’s only the blades or the mechanism.
Brought stuff in tonight trying selvage what I could. It was interesting to see one package of bits, still in their carrying case – perfect – I nearly jumped for joy.
When I opened one box, there was a gold cross on a chain and a set of gold earrings. Talk about emotion. He must have bought this as gifts in 2002 – hiding them in his shop. “Thanks, Hon.”
I kind of cringed when I saw shoes hanging off the side of his bed. Made a beeline as quickly as I could to intercept and a nurse was scurrying also. Wayne’s only real upset is other residents in his room let alone his bed!
It was so sweet, his “neighbor” often gets confused and naps on his bed when he’s out. This day she clutched his little plastic box to her chest. Now that’s a real no-no as he puts his eye glasses in it at night.
He actually was Ok as I really played it how she just missed her room by one door, etc. She got up and apologized profusely, wandering off into the next (incorrect) room.
(This lady also walked around with a scowl which I came to realize was just her mass confusion. A few weeks ago I started calling her by first name and hugging her. She would join us around a table with several other residents. It’s just so wonderful, when she sees me now, a big smile. All they need is love.\0

I met Wayne at a basketball game many years ago. He was a star and could sink shots from center court. Floods of memories came back to me and hopefully to Wayne. He dribbled so well and even turned in circles with his arm out guarding. I tried to capture him with my digital but he moved quickly – I should buy a video camera to record his fun.(I’ll upload a few pics, hopefully not boring you but I’m just so excited he was able to play a bit.)
Something I did notice is that he’d get set for a shot at the basket and then change his hands position and toss the ball under hand. Interesting.
