I watched a male resident casually eat sandwiches from the lady’s plate. He would take a fair size bite, put sandwich back then eat some of his own meal. I was worried for her as she is so slim already.
After a bit, I quietly notified the nurses. “Oh, my gosh. He could choke! He’s on a pureed diet.” He seemed to be doing very well. They will seat him across the table from a male resident for his next meals, hoping he can’t reach across.

We see this so often at the hospital. People do not realize the issues with swallowing problems. We had a kind family member who brought in ice cream for all 30 patients on the unit this summer. It did not even occur to her that most of them were unable to eat it. Thank goodness she asked before she handed it out.
I guess where there is a will…there is a way at least from his point of view.
I have to say this – I know the nursing home is trying to save him – but gosh – it’s so sad – he just wants to ‘eat’.

Wow, it’s a good thing you were there to report this; a little indulgence every once in a while doesn’t hurt, but the poor thin lady…she needs to eat, too!
