Our world has turned upside down the last couple weeks – I could barely think straight and just couldn’t read or post. tonight I’m just starting to read your blogs again and it will take a bit.
When I visited Wayne today he looked absolutely handsome and so healthy – I could just scream in frustration.
I was talking with a resident the other day and commented that the food was really good. He said, “Most of the time but it’s not forever.”
***** Should have made it clearer – I think he meant he is not in the care home forever.
He stared at the dinner plate, picked up his fork and spoon, held them in position then changed hands.
Stared at his plate again then at the utensils.
He was perplexed and his face showed how confused he was.
The sausage stared back at him – he set the fork and spoon down and ate the sausage with his hands.
***** This resident is capable of using a table knife but somehow his place setting didn’t include one. I was about to take one to him when he picked the sausage up in his hand.
Wayne hasn’t been able to manage a knife for a couple years. One time a resident who was “better” than the others asked me why some had no knives, “Are they crazy and dangerous!???” I don’t remember my reply.
We had a wonderful visit at the lake – our cousin and his wife and family have spent years there in rec vehicles.
Last year, Cousin was diagnosed with MS – went to Bulgaria in Oct. for treatment which seemed to help for a bit – then his world declined.
This summer his speech is slurred, he uses a wheelchair and walker – canes no longer.
In the sadness and shock of it all, I had the camera but didn’t even think to take it in the boat. Course Cousin can no longer manage the dock or getting in the boat.
Wayne absolutely loved the boat ride. It was a challenge to get him safely down the dock and into the boat but he wore a huge smile the whole time.
Years ago, Wayne built a boat to pull water skiers so he loves anything to do with water – and was raised on the ocean.
